MISSION

Discover a problem plaguing the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle, WA and design a solution that alleviates that problem.
UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM
In order to understand who goes to the Wing Luke Museum we interviewed staff members to gain demographic data. As well as preforming field observations by spending multiple days at the museum observing, and taking note on how people interacted with the museum.
I worked with my team to create a survey, which with we then created posters with QR codes to put up around Wing Luke. This helped us gather further qualitative data on the people who attended the museum.
With this data I created 3 personas that myself and my team used to define pain points, success, and opportunities at the Wing Luke Museum.
DEFINING SUCCESSES, OPPORTUNITIES, AND PAIN POINTS
ROSE (SUCCESSES)

- Guided Tours
People who had visited The Wing Luke would always recommend the guided tours. The reviewers cited the guide's knowledge and stories about the areas to be interesting.

- Interesting Exhibits

Despite being small, there were a lot of items, exhibits and interesting history. The Wing Luke Museum has a lot of exhibits as they're representing a lot of different peoples and cultures.

BUD (OPPORTUNITIES)

- The Wing Luke has walking and food tours they have throughout Seattle
Though the walking and food tours are available, they can take months to schedule.  This could be an opportunity to make them more accessible somehow

- The Bruce Lee exhibit
Bruce Lee was a very famous Asian American actor and with the Wing Luke being one of the only places outside China that has an exhibit about him generates a lot of interest from tourists and visitors.  Though they come with the sole intent of seeing the exhibit, most of the time, visitors also check out everything else as well, making the Bruce Lee exhibit a very good gateway to get people interested in the Wing Luke Museum.

- Membership Opportunities
We can help the Wing Luke give back to those that help fund the Wing Luke.
THORN (PAIN POINTS)

- Most visitors wander in

Most visitors wander in and don't know that the Wing Luke is a museum. The entrance to the Wing Luke is very unassuming.

- Accessibility
The Wing Luke has problems with it’s accessibility, from handicapped accessibility to small text panels and no multilingual options.

- Digital Guided Tours
The Wing Luke is unable to do guided tours due to the pandemic. the Wing Luke  is supplementing its guided tours with Zoom tours that have polarized responses. While they are still very informative, zoom limitations can make the experience a little frustrating to interact.
IDEATING AND PROPOSE POTENTIONAL DESIGNS
We used our personas as a basis to create several ideas of how to  design solutions to different pain points for the museum.
After meeting with the stakeholders at Wing Luke they wanted to focus on the lack of incentive to return pain point.
We designed a pin collection program that improved interactivity, with the museum while creating an incentive to return through exclusive pins. Customers would get tokens for a capsule machine by completing various tasks around the Wing Luke Museum.
After discussing what is viable budget and staff wise the Wing Luke wanted to lean into creating a pin incentive program, while scrapping the capsule machine aspect of the project.

example of pin prototypes we created

I created a design system so that Wing Luke could hire local AAPI (Asian American, Pacific Islander) Artists to create pins as well as the collection cards that would come with the pins.
We had Asian American artists on our team design pins and collection cards that customers could receive by visiting the Wing Luke and completing tasks Seasonally, which would incentivize return to the Wing Luke for customers who wanted to complete their pin set annually.
